Lurk before you leap. Get a feel for what is considered to be acceptable in this community before posting.

Behave as you would in a real life conversation and remember it is other people you are talking to.

The Internet brings so many people together yet makes conversation very impersonal without the use of gesture or expression. To prevent misunderstanding use smilies to show your mood or intent. Also avoid the use of capital letters as this is deemed to be shouting and thus rude.

Be tolerant of other people, particularly when their opinion differs from your own.

Be forgiving of mistakes or lack of Internet knowledge. Many people are new to the Internet so they may ask questions that seem obvious or stupid. Think twice before reacting, it is better to politely educate people rather than insult them.

Finally, one of the most important tips is do not over react, particularly as many comments are made in jest. Banter, wind-ups and put downs are acceptable within forum etiquette.

Chattiquette :
Here are some important etiquette (manners) expected in the "Chat" world:

1. Picture yourself entering into a party of people (initially strangers) from all over the world, with varying ages and backgrounds, and act accordingly. You might greet the group, you might watch quietly at first from the sidelines to determine the tone of the party. After listening for a few minutes, you may find that this isn't the kind of party you like.... and that's ok. There are plenty of other parties you can choose from; just leave as politely as you arrived.

2. Don't worry about correcting typographical errors. They are expected, and can actually be a GREAT source of laughter for everyone (be sure you share in the laughter). If you proofread everything you type, you will be too slow, and any reply may be out of context by the time you push the "enter" key.

3. Flirting is fine when you are with an appropriate group. Outright sexual comments and/or requests are NOT ok unless in a room designed for such.

4. As in real life, some people will be rude or offensive. Humor works better at diffusing potential problems than anger does. Ignoring them works even better. Anger on-line is a waste of energy.

5. Most chatters are nice. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask and expect their replies.

6. It is very helpful to address your comments to the specific recipient if there is one. For example: "ladyblue <or whatever the chatter's nickname is>, where did you say you were from?"

7. It's perfectly alright to shorten somebody's chatting nickname when you're "talking" to them.
8. Ignore all those stories about "masquerading" as someone else on line... and just be yourself! You'll have a more great deal of fun, find better friends, and not irritate the heck out of people when you're "found out" (which you will be eventually - trust me. Experienced chatters can almost always sense "fakes")

9. Plain text may not express the tone of the comment, which is why we use abbreviations, acronyms and emoticons (symbols that indicate various facial expressions) to clarify how we say things

10. When chatting with known participants it is not uncommon to greet each other with a *kotc* (kiss on the cheek) or a *hugs* or a *extending hand*. This is like shaking hands, patting each other on the back, or smiling in the real world.

11. If you do not know any of the participants in the discussion, introduce yourself briefly.

12. If you do not want to participate in the ongoing discussion, but want your presence known, state that you are lurking. This is polite, especially if you plan to chat once the topic shifts.

13. When you are ready to leave the chat area, state you are leaving and then stay around and respond to final messages.

Learn from the experts! Here are the common no-no's in the "chat" world. Be careful of these things, or you might be adviced or "scolded"!

A. Offensive, racist, harassing behavior including personal attacks (flames) and/or threats.

B. Typing in all CAPITAL LETTERS. This is considered "yelling" and rude.

C. Polling is asking people to respond to a question with a series of numbers or letters.

D. Not respecting the rules of the forum. If it's a G rated topic, keep it clean. If it's a chatroom with a specific topic (i.e. "Windows2000"), stay with the topic.

E. Rudeness. Play nice, and remember that one of the chatters may be your next door neighbor!

F. Whining that no one will "talk" to you.

G. Posing as another chatter. Duplication of common nicknames occur.. but the deliberate act of being an imposter is considered... well... almost a violation of privacy. Don't do it.

H. Chatting "under the influence". Please chat "straight and sober". YOU may think you're doing just fine - but trust me, you're not. Just as it is in real life, you're probably not nearly as clever or able to hide it well in chat as you think :-)

Note: i just copied this from a chat/forum site i was active before.i think this might help our forumers.

Used to be a very good resource but it has been flooded with advertisements and reviews are always one-sided. Try Tomshardware.com instead.
