Tiriladan sa Dalan
by MHA Loterte
SORSOGON CITY (19 June) -- Everyone is getting agog over a pioneering and historical event that will highlight this city?s 5th Pili Festival on June 19-30, this year. The ?Tiriladan sa Dalan? or cracking open of pili nut, set on June 28 at 7:00 a.m., is expected to draw a mammoth crowd as locals as well as visitors and tourists who signed up are getting ready for the event. In a press conference, Philippine Information Agency Sorsogon Infocenter manager Irma Guhit, the brain behind the idea, announced that an estimated 25,000 ?paratilad? (nut cracker) are expected to participate in the ?tiriladan? event that is raring to be included in the Guinness Book of Records as the first and longest stretch of pili nut cracking activity. With the theme ?Go Nutty, Be Naughty, Come and Join the Pili Tiriladan sa Dalan in Sorsogon City?, said activity will be participated by Sorsogon City government officials and employees, barangay officials, teachers and students, local residents and tourists, among many others, added Guhit. City Mayor Sally Lee confirmed that she has already invited the chief executives of the different municipalities in the province and other neighboring localities, as well as newly elected senators Jamby Madrigal and Dick Gordon, and Department of Tourism Secretary Roberto Pagdanganan to join the ?Tiriladan sa Dalan?, to crack open a number of pili nuts. Lee hopes that it will become a major tourism attraction not only for the province or the Bicol region but also for the national and international community that would help boost tourism potentials and provide the needed economic returns aside from making this city the frontier of festivities in Sorsogon. The DOT in Bicol region, headed by Director Maria O. Ravanilla, helped in promoting the nut cracking event and the entire festival to draw more tourists to Sorsogon City for the Pili Festival 2004. Barangay Captain Blandino Diaz, Sorsogon City Liga ng mga Barangay president and chief coordinator of the ?tiriladan? event, confirmed that at least 35 barangays within the entire 25-kilometer highway from Poblacion, Bacon district to Salvacion, Sorsogon West District, as well as the 39 others, will take part in the activity. According to Sorsogon City Schools Division Superintendent Emma Cornejo, all schools within the stretch, both public and private, will also be required to join by tapping the teachers and schoolchildren for the ?tiriladan? event. The city government will purchase the pili that will be distributed to the resident-participants who will be given a stone each for cracking open the nuts while the visitors will be provided with a bolo and a chopping board. The ?Tiriladan sa Dalan? will only run for 30 minutes, around 8:00 - 8:30 a.m., with the participants to crack only 5 to 10 pili nuts. The Pili Festival 2004 also holds one theme focusing on ?pili?, which in Filipino and local term means ?to choose? or ?chosen?, that will revolve on the over-all theme ?Piling-piling Okasyon san mga Piling-piling Tawo na may Malinig na Lugar nan Mauswag na Ciudad nin Sorsogon?. The festivity had a soft kick-off on Tuesday, June 1, with the opening of the agro-industrial fair so-called ?Pili ka? Bakal Na! Tiangge? boasting the city?s local industry including an array of pili products plus the famous hand-woven crafts. On the same day, the month-long nightime cultural shows, band concerts, street parties at the provincial capitol grounds opened to offer fun-filled nightlife to the locals and tourists alike, with a number of food stalls serving native cuisine and local delicacies, including pili-flavored viands and ?pulutans?. The grand launching of the festival will be on Saturday, June 19, with the Festival Light switch-on of the pili lanterns lined-up along the city?s main thoroughfares, and unveiling of the tarpaulin banners depicting this year?s celebration. Thematic events slated for the festivity are, pili funniest story dubbed ?Paharandaban, Panaratukan: Istorya Pagtubudan?? a day or less privileged children or ?Aldaw san mga Piling Kabatitan?, ?We?re Nuts? youth day, ?Nikit na Talaga!? Search for Lolo King and Lola Queen Pili Festival, Miss Sorsogon and Pili Festival beauty pageant, the pili challenge: relay and nut cracking contest, pili body painting mania, pili adventure race, pili preparation and cooking demo and food fest. This year?s festival will not be complete without the Pili Festival Street Dance and Presentation, featuring the local dancers who hugged the national limelight during the WOW Sorsogon City presentation in Intramuros, Best of the Best Festivals in Luneta, and Aliwan in Manila. Local participants coming from the different barangays and schools will also join the street dancing. Other activities include interfaith/ecumenical prayer services, medical mission/free clinic, art exhibit, civic and military street parade marching band, dance sport and ballroom dancing competition,Tia Sally?s Fisherfolk Olympics, blessing of the baywalk (newly renovated rompeolas), La Naval religious procession, fire works display and barangay night. The Pili Festival 2004 will conclude with the celebration of the 4th Sorsogon City Foundation Anniversary on June 30. PIA SORSOGON HERE |
